Unitarian Church Seeks A ‘Hater’ in Sudbury

February 2, 2001

The Unitarian Church may have finally found the “hater” they have been seeking throughout Massachusetts.

A vandal in Sudbury has used magic markers to write swastikas on the rainbow symbols of homosexuality that are displayed on church signs outside their building, according to Channel 5. A rainbow flag also flies over the church entrance.

“Obviously, it’s a hate crime,” said Sgt. Todd Eadie of the Sudbury police. “So we are treating it seriously.”

The minister of the church, Rev. Katie Lee, said: “We are stunned. We are in grief. We feel like we have been violated in some way.” The church members cleaned the magic marker off the signs on Saturday, but the swastikas reappeared the next day.

Channel 5 reported the story in its usual manner with a headline, ”Church Coping With Hate Crimes,” The lead sentence was, “A church in Sudbury has become the target of a hate crime.”

Work of Vandals
Although everyone agrees that this work of vandals is deplorable, many believe that this type of publicity is exactly what the Unitarians have been seeking for years.

Their church in the neighboring town of Concord helped sponsor a rally last year to promote “safety in the schools” even though they admitted that they had had no problems at all. This caused our reporter to write, “If anyone knows a ‘homophobe’ who would like to move to Concord, that town is searching for someone to hate.”

The Unitarians in Sudbury apparently hope they have finally found one. There is no doubt that these religious people have very strong feelings on this -- and every other subject. They refuse to acknowledge that there are many sincere, intelligent persons who believe the Unitarians are causing serious damage to homosexuals. The Unitarians believe that they alone are on the side of God. They do not even consider that they may be wrong.

The Unitarians know that their flag and signs will cause intense feelings in some people. It is a tribute to the citizens have apparently ignored them up until this incident. Despite their obvious attempt to arouse “haters,” the Unitarians have been totally unsuccessful so far.

The Unitarians are proud of the fact that they are non-violent. But the definition of violent, according to Webster, is “showing, or resulting from, strong feeling or emotion” and “great force or strength of feeling.”

There is no question that the exact reason the church is showing these symbols outside their building is because they have such strong feeling about the subject. This is “violent” behavior on their part.

Students Under Great Pressure
Hopefully, the teenage idiot who did this will not do it again. But our students are put under great pressure in the schools to listen to, and agree with, indoctrination with which their parents and many other reasonable adults strongly disagree. Most parents would be appalled if they knew what their children are subjected to in school.

They are still hearing, under pressure from the Unitarians, the old-fashioned, out-of-date screed that "homosexuals are born that way" and "God made them that way." This was believed back in 1993 before the "gay gene" theory was repudiated by everyone. If that theory were true, then everyone would agree with them. But hanging flags and painting symbols does not make these falsehoods correct – no matter how much the Unitarians get in everyone’s face with “fighting words.”

In light of the many false charges that occurred across the country in the past year, some are wondering if this was the work of a homosexual who did the vandalism in an attempt to garner publicity -- similar to the UMass coed who caused great distress in Amherst after saying she had been sexually attacked. Over $150,000 was spent by the school on increased security, yet the name of the woman has never been released, much less any criminal charges filed.

Hopefully, the Unitarians’ provocative behavior will not be successful in igniting any of the real nuts in our community.
