Dr. Pollack has gotten large amounts of hysterical publicity from Newsweek, Time, People and all the major TV shows, including Oprah. He is telling the world that men and boys are in serious trouble and we must correct the "problem" by changing the basic nature of boys in our public schools.

Questions Used by Dr. Pollack to Disparage American Boys

July 2001

Massachusetts News does not have a copy of the test which was given to the students at Belmont Hill but we are told that these are some of the questions that were asked. Some of them may have minor changes in the wording. We have added a “Correct Feminist Answer” which we believe is what Dr. Pollack wanted from the boys and a “Thoughtful Answer,” which is how the editors believe a thoughtful person would respond if allowed to do so.

According to Headmaster Melvoin’s letter to parents, “Most of the questions and lines of inquiry came from standard, commonly used surveys” including the Coopersmith Inventory, another called the Best Inventory and a picture/story exercise.

The Coopersmith survey is an apparently transparent test that attempts to determine whether the student believes that men and women are the same. Although there are thirty or more questions, they basically ask the same thing over and over. A sample of the questions are:

  • A husband should leave the care of young babies to his wife.

Correct’ Feminist Answer. Disagree.

Thoughtful Answer. In order to answer this question, you must know whether the mother is working outside the home. You should also know whether the mother is nursing the baby. If she is not working outside the home and is nursing the baby, it is clear that she will want to be much more involved with the care of a newborn baby. If she is working outside, it is apparent that the father will also have to help although a mother will usually not ask for much help because she will feel that he is not as adequate at that task as she.

  • I don’t think a husband should have to do housework.

Correct’ Feminist Answer. Disagree.

Thoughtful Answer. In order to answer this question, you must know where the couple lives. If they live on a farm, the man will be doing the strenuous (sometime dangerous) outside labor and the wife will be managing the house and the children. If they live in a suburban home, the man will usually be doing the outside yard work and the wife will be doing the housework. If they live in an apartment and they both work, they will be sharing the housework.

  • Women have as much ability as men to make major business decisions.

Correct’ Feminist Answer. Agree.

Thoughtful Answer. We have rediscovered what everyone always knew down through the centuries up until the 1960s: women want to raise children, not spend their time in an office. They enjoy raising children. It is difficult to do something when you want to be somewhere else. Surveys show that 80% of women would quit their jobs if they could. Therefore, those 20% who want to work probably have as much “ability” as men, but you could not say that “all women” have that ability if they don’t want to do it.

  • Men and women should be given an equal chance for professional training.

Correct’ Feminist Answer. Agree.

Thoughtful Answer. Many women who become medical doctors or other specialists in our country often have feelings of guilt when they suddenly quit to raise a family. They worry whether they took a place in medical school that was wasted. That is not a serious problem in our country where we have the space in schools but in developing countries, it could be a problem.

  • The husband should be the head of the family.

Correct’ Feminist Answer. Disagree.

Thoughtful Answer. When the present institution of marriage was begun, imperfect as it was, by the Jews some 4000 years ago, they believed that the husband should be the head of the family and he should love and respect his wife. There could be books written on this question. When the Baptist Church recently discussed this issue, the popular press laughed in ridicule. To expect a simplistic answer to this question is not only religious bigotry but shows that the author of the test has no knowledge whatsoever about a thoughtful discussion of this issue.

  • It is worse for a woman to get drunk than for a man.

Correct’ Answer. Disagree.

Thoughtful Answer. We are taught today that casual sexual intercourse for a woman is normal and expected. Therefore, the tolerance for predator males is high and a woman must be careful. When she is drunk, she is highly vulnerable. That is not the way I would like the world to be, but any woman who ignores that obvious fact is at her peril.

- Etc., etc., etc.
