Lesbians Pick Children
Like Eating at a Salad Bar

January 2001

In a sidebar in Boston Magazine by a lesbian couple, they wrote how they picked the sperm for their daughter. They say that they buy it online and have it shipped from California on dry ice. It costs $165.

“Buying sperm can be much like shopping the aisles at BJ’s or Costco. There are so many choices – hair, skin tone, childhood diseases, grandparents’ hobbies, maternal aunts’ educational backgrounds. Hmm, tall genes would be nice. Oh look, honey, math and engineering skills.”

The couple, who are Jewish, did not consider the eugenicists who operated in Germany only a little over fifty years ago when the couple decided to specify that the sperm they were buying had to be from a “Jewish” man.
