Pollack
is Proud of Membership January 2001 Dr. Pollack is very proud that he is a “founding member” and “fellow” of the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity of the American Psychological Association. He states that proudly on the dust jacket of his book, right after his affiliation with Harvard. The group became a permanent part of the APA in 1997. Its members believe that men “have contributed to the oppression of other people.” It acknowledges that it is guided by feminist ideology saying: “ SPSMM acknowledges its historical debt to feminist-inspired scholarship on gender, and commits itself to the support of groups such as women, gays, lesbians and peoples of color that have been uniquely oppressed by the gender/class/racesystem.” It has a “Task Force on Adolescent Boys” which will “chart directions into the new frontiers of the next century through a critical examination of the policy issues, current knowledge, and research approaches to understanding adolescent boys.” Prof. Pollack is a member of the Editorial Board of their magazine, “Psychology of Men & Masculinity,” as is Carol Gilligan. The editor is David Lisak, Umass/Boston. The editor of their newsletter is James R. Mahalik, Boston College. The chair of a task force on “The Psychology of Men in the Larger System” is Joel Eichler, MIT.
