Satire:
Terror in Newton

By Mickey Mouselover
December 2001

I continue to be amazed that my tolerant friends and neighbors in Newton don’t realize the terror we have going on right here in Newton – every day of the year..

We don’t need to look at the attacks at the World Trade Center or the anthrax deaths.

We see death every day in Newton among our little friends that everyone has deserted, the mice and rats of our city.

Just because they’re not as big as deer or coyotes doesn’t mean we shouldn’t protect them. After all their ancestors were probably here before any of those larger animals. They have feelings too. Where is PETA? They claim they love animals, but they discriminate according to the size of the animal. If an animal is big enough to fight back, it gets respect; if not, it suffers from terror at the hands of Newton citizens.

Why don’t you buy your child a white mouse as a pet? Let him or her see what loving creatures they are. If we can change the children, perhaps we can make a difference.

Yet we are still crushing them with traps, killing them with poison and even electrocuting them. (What ghoulish torture will they think of next?) We even force hospitals and restaurants to commit this terror upon these helpless creatures.

It was very discouraging this month to receive hate mail from some of my neighbors. They told me that if I didn’t stop reviling the people of Newton for not doing more to help the defenseless animals in the world they were going to run me out of town and make me move to Cambridge or some other “extremist” place. Thank goodness, those crazy right-wingers are only a minority in this wonderful city.

Nevertheless, this can be lonely work but it is worth the effort. Thanks to all of you who are still supporting me in this time of testing of all of us.

Please keep giving your love to all animals, not just human ones.

Until next month, your friend, Mickey
