Romney Defends Position Against
Stem Cell Research
Speaking
after an education event in Cambridge yesterday, Gov. Mitt Romney
was forced to defend his position on stem cell research following
a regulatory ruling by his Public Health Council.
The Council voted on Tuesday
to prohibit the creation of embryos by fertilization solely for use
in such research. It touched off a firestorm of criticism from legislators
who authored the current stem cell legislation and researchers who
were expecting a liberal policy regarding stem cells.
“That is a bright
line I don’t think should be crossed,” Romney said, referring
to the prohibition adopted unanimously by the Council. Romney added:
“It is Orwellian in scope. It’s almost like the movie
‘The Matrix’” where human babies are conceived and
grown in controlled environments by machines in order to be harvested
for their energy.
