Freedom Will Conquer Racism |
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, taking another public slap at same-sex marriage, told the California GOP convention on Saturday that "every child deserves a mother and a father.” Romney has frequently taken the opportunity to express his opposition to gay marriage at conservative gatherings nationwide and rallies in the Bible belt. However many conservatives point out that he has not been so controversial while on home turf, where his opinion of gay marriage might actually matter. For example, in his primary campaign in 2002, he expressed his disapproval with the position of his wife, son and daughter-in-law who had all signed the petition for the Protection of Marriage Amendment. Although the petition was ratified by the Attorney General, it was illegally killed by the legislature when they voted to adjourn the Constitutional Convention without voting on it. Romney was totally silent then. And when the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court wrote the gay marriage ruling in 2003, Romney as the Chief executive of the state, could have ignored it and not issued an executive order to town clerks ordering them to accept licenses for same-sex couples. He did, however, order the ruling of Chief Justice Margaret Marshall to be carried out, despite the overwhelming evidence that it was not legal. Many conservatives are wondering if he will do the right thing before the primaries next year and rescind his order to execute the Goodridge decision. Only then might Romney be hailed as a true statesman, rather than just a chameleon who tailors his position to the immediate audience before him.
