DiMasi Gives Up on Meeting for Bond Bill
After intense pressure from the Romney Administration and fellow lawmakers including Senate President Travaglini, Speaker Sal DiMasi has finally set a date, September 5, for a special session of the legislature to vote on a long overdue bond bill.
However, he has still failed to take the required vote on Emile Goguen’s Resolution to remove the four judges who voted to impose gay marriage, as required by the Constitution written by John Adams in 1780. It is required under the state constitution that a vote be taken immediately after the resolution is filed.
DiMasi’s compliance on the bond bill comes too late to save the jobs of a number of technology specialists who have already been issued their pink slips.
In a statement emailed by his spokeswoman Friday, DiMasi said, "As I said last week, I am hesitant to bring the House back into formal session for anything other than an emergency situation. After meeting with Secretary Trimarco, Commissioner Perini and Chief Information Officer Gutierrez yesterday, I have come to the conclusion that the timely passage of the bond bill constitutes such an emergency. Therefore, I intend to bring the House of Representatives back into session for one day.”
A number of people find DiMasi’s use of the phrase “timely passage of the bond bill” curious since it is overdue by nearly a year.
In a statement Wednesday, Senate President Travaglini said lawmakers need to address "a handful of important legislative matters" which would include not only the bond bill, but the veteran’s “Welcome Home” program funding, as well as other legislation ignored by DiMasi.
