Names the Enemy: Islamic Fascists
With
the revelation of another plot involving Muslims and American passenger
jets, President Bush spoke Thursday about the seriousness of the situation
that the U.S. is in with the war on terror. For perhaps the first
time, he identified the “enemy” with a religious appellation.
He described the terrorists as “Islamic Fascists”. His
statement was:
"The
recent arrests that our fellow citizens are now learning about are
a stark reminder that this nation is at war with Islamic fascists
who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to
hurt our nation."
His
statement was enthusiastically received by many in the general populace,
who have wondered why he has been so reluctant to acknowledge that
Fundamentalist Islam has been the common thread in virtually every
terrorist attack on U.S. citizens since the 1970s. Still, it is a
far cry from Bush’s earliest statements on the war on terror.
Right after 9-11, Bush stated in a special televised address that:
”The
face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That's not what Islam
is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don't represent peace.
They represent evil and war.”
