New Health Board Going
to Hold Private Meetings, Despite Law
The
new board charged with overseeing
the implementation of the state's “universal” health insurance access
law agreed yesterday (Thursday) to hold a private “informational”
and “educational” retreat for board members, after a legal memo from
Mintz Levin
claimed they could do so without breaking the state’s
Open Meeting Law.
Many
cannot help to point out the irony that it was just such meetings
that helped to unravel Hillary Clinton’s plans for universal healthcare
back in 1993.
In
1993, White House counsel told her that it was okay for her to have
her Task Force meet privately in their quest to enact universal healthcare. A number of organizations, including the National
Legal and Policy Center,
filed suit against the Task Force, and Hillary’s staff felt compelled
to begin destroying the documentation of their meetings, rather than
disclose exactly what they were planning.
The
Massachusetts board
could find themselves in court likewise, if they spend any time discussing
issues like affordability or ways of executing the new healthcare
law while on their “retreat”.
