Intends to Give Away Billions…to Liberal Groups
Billionaire
investor Warren Buffett announced Sunday that he plans to give up
to $37 billion of his roughly $42 billion fortune to five foundations
in annual gifts of stock starting next month.
On
the top of the list, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which
gives away billions to third-world countries for HIV prevention, scholarships
for minority students and liberal groups like the United Way.
Much of the remaining stock
will go to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, begun by his late
wife. Her foundation has given millions of dollars to hospitals, universities
and teachers, as well as to Planned Parenthood and other abortion
rights groups.
In
the last five years, the Gates Foundation has given away over $6 billion
dollars, with the majority of that going to third world countries
for family planning and research into the spread of viruses, like
HIV and malaria.
