Harvard to Launch Embryonic Stem Cell Project
Researchers at the Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital will be using human embryonic stem cells in experiments aimed at creating stem cell lines that might be used to develop new treatments for various diseases. This is despite the fact that many researchers recently have concluded that adult stem cells were as effective in finding cures as embryonic cells.
The research was announced at a press conference yesterday (Tuesday), with university officials saying the work will be paid for privately because of federal restrictions on human embryonic stem cell work.
The Massachusetts Legislature last year approved a law sanctioning embryonic stem cell research over the objections of Gov. Mitt Romney and other critics who said the work was unethical because it involves the destruction of human embryos. At that time, Harvard University President Lawrence Summers said "While we understand and respect the sincerely held beliefs of those who oppose this research, we are equally sincere in our belief that the life-and-death medical needs of countless suffering children and adults justifies moving forward with this research."
