Crosses Mourning Those Who Died Illegally Entering U.S. Will Be Placed on Boston Common Today
Three hundred wooden crosses symbolizing the numerous immigrants who have died trying to enter this country illegally will be placed on Boston Common today.
The organizer of the event says the “deaths have occurred on our borders because of our broken immigration system.”
In a direct reference to Pres. Bush’s plan to utilize National Guard to help federal agents, the organizer, Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, says: “Countless future deaths will undoubtedly occur with the militarization of the border.”
Activists on the other side, say they are sympathetic that human beings have died trying to cross barren areas between Mexico and Texas, but the U.S. cannot be held liable for what may happen to an immigrant who is trying to enter the country illegally.
“We are saddened that individuals have lost their lives in the attempt to enter,” Jim Rizoli, founder of Concerned Citizens and Friends of Illegal Immigration Law Enforcement told MassNews. “The real criminal part of this is that the Mexican government not only knows that their citizens are attempting to cross and are dying there, but they even encourage people to try to cross illegally.”
Rizoli, who clarifies that he is not anti-immigrant, just anti-illegal immigrant, believes that if Mexican immigrants and the Mexican government respected U.S. immigration laws, there would be no unnecessary deaths on the border, and the immigration problem would be solved here.
