Did You Love Ronald Reagan? Tony Snow Did Not
During
the last three years of George H. W. Bush’s liberal Presidency, Tony
Snow was in the top echelon at the White House (from 1991-1993). Most
conservatives were disgusted with the elder Bush. That’s why they
had elected Reagan in the 1980 primary. Consequently, they didn’t
hurry with enthusiasm to vote for Bush in 1992 and Bill Clinton took
the Presidency.
This all happened because Ronald
Reagan had made the serious mistake in 1980 of naming George H. W.
Bush as his Vice President in order to “balance” the ticket. The elder
Bush consequently brought to the White House many liberals, such as
James Baker, in order to watch and control Reagan. His first job was
as Reagan’s Chief of Staff.
During the 1980 Primary,
Bush had unsuccessfully opposed Reagan and had referred to Reagan’s
supply-side economics (which resulted in a huge boost to the economy)
as “voo-doo economics.” After Reagan left office in 1988, Bush promised
the voters a “kinder, gentler” America,
as though Reagan had not been “kind” and “gentle.”
This was the White
House where Snow served at the very top, as Chief Speechwriter and
“Deputy Assistant to the President for Media Affairs” from 1991-1993.
It is impossible
to say that Snow did not understand all this when he served in the
top levels of the Bush Presidency.
Tony is now returning
to the White House to do the same thing to George W. Bush that he
helped the liberal wing of the Party, led by Pres. George H. W. Bush,
do to Ronald Reagan and his beloved conservatives.
If that is confusing
to you, just consider that George W. Bush is a conservative, but his
father was not. Nor is Tony Snow. Brit Hume
is a conservative who would be very helpful
to George W. Bush.
