Speaker
DiMasi Says Slots Bill Will Fail
In a speech
yesterday to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, House Speaker
Sal DiMasi told more than 400 business leaders that the slot machine
bill was likely to be defeated in the House. He said that it would
not have been the economic bonanza that supporters are claiming.
“To
me, to be perfectly honest with you, it doesn’t appear to be
this economic stimulus proposal that people suggest. I don’t
think we’ll get the revenues that people think we will. It comes
with a cost, a social cost as well. I’m not sure, that at this
particular juncture I would put all of my eggs in the basket in making
sure that we’re going to depend on gaming for revenues.”
House
leaders have been lobbying colleagues to vote against the proposal
in preparation for a scheduled vote on April 5. It would allow for
the licensing of up to 8,000 machines at four racetracks in the state.
Even if there is a majority supporting the slots bill, Gov. Romney
has promised to veto it. Most believe there are not enough votes to
overcome the veto.
The
Senate approved the bill 26 to 9 last October, with proponents claiming
it would save 5,000 jobs, generate $500 million for the state budget
and offer Bay State residents an entertainment venue. Critics, such
as Rep. Bosley (D-Adams), contend that the amount of revenue projected
is inflated, and the real cost to the state is far greater than proponents
are revealing. (Read
