Globe Reporter Nina Easton Compares V.P. Cheney
to Chappaquiddick
The Boston Globe reporter
Nina Easton compared Vice President Dick Cheney to Chappaquiddick.
Nina Easton has been a commentator on Fox News Sunday with Brit Hume
where she has appeared to be a moderate. However, in a column titled
“A Chappaquiddick Comparison” (February 19, 2006) Easton
cites an unnamed “talking head” with coining the phrase
“Cheney’s Chappaquiddick” referring to his hunting
accident. She also dragged the Washington Post into the fray by telling
us with her approval that columnist David Ignatius compared the two
events saying that they “illustrate how wealthy, powerful people
can behave as if they are above the law."
Cheney mistakenly shot a
friend while they were hunting. He went to his aid, immediately called
emergency services, got the man medical treatment, and then contacted
the Sheriff’s department to give his statement. His apparent
vice was that he didn’t report to the Boston Globe and Nina
Easton. The following morning, with the Vice President’s consent,
the owner of the ranch where the incident happened went public with
the story to the local newspaper, not the Globe.
Kennedy, a married man,
after drinking at a party, drove off a bridge, left his lady passenger
in the water to drown, went back to the party he had just left, and
started making calls for the sake of damage control. During the Massachusetts
grand jury inquest, where Ted Kennedy has many friends, the jury was
led to believe that Kennedy was so traumatized that he couldn’t
think clearly, and thus, didn’t call the proper authorities.
However, since then it has come to light that he made twelve calls
between the time of the accident, and the discovery of his car in
the water the next day. Not one of them was for emergency services
or the police.
As a matter of fact, were
it not for two boys who were fishing Saturday morning and happened
to have seen the car in the water and called the police, there is
no saying if Kennedy would ever have come clean. He even demanded
of his friends at the party that they tell no one…not even the
girlfriends of Mary Jo who were still present.
