Is Andy Card Moving Back to Massachusetts?
The rumor
mills started talking about Andy Card last night after Brit Hume closed
with a segment about shaking-up the White House.
Apparently, it is
accepted wisdom in Washington that Pres. Bush will be forced to make
changes in his top staff in order to quiet some of the questions from
Democrats, whether legitimate or not, attacking his staff.
At such a time, the
Chief of Staff is often the one to leave. Most never survive the entire
eight years of a Presidency. The pundits on the show were very careful
to say that since Bush is so loyal to his staff, he seldom fires anyone.
The rumors say that
Card has always indicated his interest in returning here to become
Governor of Massachusetts. With that position being sought by Kerry
Healey, would Card wish to return here for an internecine fight in
the Republican Party? Or might he see this as an excellent time to
battle Ten Kennedy?
This raises the question
whether this might involve the sudden decision of Peter Blute. After
announcing that he was considering a run against Kennedy, he suddenly
changed his mind and decided not to do so after all. Although his
sudden reversal was inexplicable, the rumors would provide an excellent
reason for his action.
Although Card served
both father and son at the White House, his political views are much
more in-line with the father. When George W. was elected in 2000,
the machinations of the Democrats left him little time to assemble
a staff. That made his father’s experienced aide a possible choice
even though they were sharply divided on philosophy.
