Port of Boston is on the
Table in Bush's Plan to Put Under Arab Management
Top
officials in the state were surprized when it was disclosed by the
Associated Press that some operations in Boston may fall under the
management of the United Arab Emirate based Dubai Ports World.
United Arab Emirate was one of the only countries in the world
that recognized the Taliban in Afghanistan, the host government to
Osama Bin Laden in 2001.
Tom
Reilly said “If there is any
reason to believe the presence of Dubai Ports World weakens the security
of our port, the people of Boston and Massachusetts need to know about
it.” Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, asked about the issue
by reporters Tuesday, said “We need more information” about port controls
and management.
Dubai
Ports World is soon to be the mother company of Peninsula and Oriental Steam Navigation
Co, the company that leases offices at the Black Falcon Terminal in
Boston. It is contracted by cruise lines to hire and manage workers
who load and unload cruise ships. It also hires longshoremen at the
Autoport in Charlestown.
