Why Did Bernie Goldberg Tell Newsweek
Magazine that His “Conservative Friends” Will Summon a “Firing Squad”
if Liberals Say Something with Which We Disagree?
By MassNews
Staff
Does Bernie Goldberg really
believe his “conservative friends” will summon a “firing squad” if they
hear liberals write or say anything with which they disagree?
Bernie implied that in a foolish
statement he made when talking with Newsweek magazine about Bill Clinton
and Monica Lewinsky. Bernie said that the whole Monica affair was “sordid
and tawdry” but he didn’t believe that Clinton should have been impeached.
Surprise!!!
We agree with Bernie that that is a debatable issue. We’d be happy to
engage in a good debate about whether Clinton should have been impeached.
And we could argue either side. So why does Bernie talk about conservatives
calling for a “firing squad”? What responsible conservative has ever said
anything like that?
The answer, of course, is no
one ever has.
We must, however, assume that
liberals (like Bernie) are talking about people like us at MassNews when
they make such outrageous statements.
Bernie automatically made the
above response (without having to think) after being questioned by Newsweek
about people “who are not screwing up America.” The only name that Bernie mentioned
in answer to the question was an excellent liberal lawyer from Boston
who
was featured in the first issue
of MassNews, June 1999, page 2. The lawyer was Harvey Silverglate.
That’s just another example
of Bernie using MassNews as the
resource for writing his new book, “100 People Who Are Screwing Up America.”
He cites our material in many places. But if he is going to use our material
to help write his book, it doesn’t seem fair for him to inaccurately portray
us as “fringe.”
(We wrote about Atty. Silverglate
in our first issue because he had just finished a book, “The Shadow University”,
in which he called for the end of P.C. Speech Codes in colleges and universities.
The Newsweek
story appeared exclusively on their website on July 30, 2005)
