Romney, Dukakis, Patrick to Face Off on Death Penalty
Gov. Mitt Romney will join a former governor and a gubernatorial hopeful in appearing before a legislative committee today to argue whether the state should reinstate the death penalty.
The Judiciary Committee will hear testimony on the four bills calling for capital punishment, beginning with testimony from legislators, who will argue both sides, legislative aides said. Romney, who is sponsoring one bill, plans to testify at 11 am, followed by Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey and Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz in support of the death penalty.
Former Gov. Michael Dukakis, Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley, Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating, and Democratic candidate for governor Deval Patrick, are expected to testify in opposition, aides said. The hearing begins at 10 am in Gardner Auditorium.
