Lawmakers Advance Gang Violence Prevention Bill
Members of the Public Safety Committee Friday approved a revised version of legislation aimed at reducing gang violence that includes $11 million in grants available to communities with programs targeted at youths. The proposal also establishes a statewide witness protection program to be managed by a five-member board, prevents the illegal gun trafficking, and increases the penalties for possessing an illegal loaded firearm.
In addition, the legislation, shepherded by Sen. Jarrett Barrios (D-Cambridge) and Rep. Stephen Canessa (D-Lakeville), broadens the scope of witness intimidation to include interference at any stage of an investigation or trial. Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey is pushing a similar package of legislation aimed at reducing gang violence. That bill is before the Judiciary Committee and has yet to have a hearing.
