Rep. Emile Goguen Plans to Retire at End of Session in
Dec. 2006; No Effect on Goguen's Resolution to End Gay Marriage
Rep. Emile
Goguen (D-Fitchburg) has announced he will retire at the end of this
legislative session in Dec. 2006.
Goguen told
the Fitchburg Sentinel in an article in today's edition that he will
make a final decision in February about whether he will run for re-election
next year.
He acknowledged he
has thought seriously about retiring. "I'm leaning toward not running,"
he told the Fitchburg paper. The popular Rep is 72-years-old, has had
a pacemaker for several years and had to have new batteries installed
last Friday, which gave him time to think about his future.
This will have no effect
at all upon Goguen's Resolution to Remove from office the four SJC judges
who imposed gay marriage upon the state.
Many observers are
speculating that DiMasi will now put pressure on the four judges to
resign because then the Reps would not have to vote. If the judges just
resign as most people desire, then Rep. Goguen's Resolution would, in
effect become null and void.
If DiMasi does not
take care of it this year, it will be back to haunt him again through
2006 inasmuch as the Resolution will carry-over until Dec. 2006. That
would mean more banner airplanes, more radio ads and the end of DiMasi's
career.
