Despite
Calls from Judges, Lawyers and Legislators to Resign, Justice Margaret
Marshall Continues to Damage the Court and Her Future
Even though many
observers are advising Margaret Marshall to resign immediately, her
failure to do so is causing puzzlement about what it is that is motivating
her. The damage that is occurring to the venerable Supreme Judicial
Court as an institution, is troubling many lawyers, judges and others.
A nasty comment in
the Boston Globe a week ago said that Marshall has to learn to "keep
her mouth shut." This is an indication that The New York Times
Company will be throwing Marshall overboard very shortly. The comment
about "her mouth" was the very first sentence in a column
by prominent Globe columnist, Brian McGrory, who did not write such
a thing on his own.
We've already published
articles about the Sulzberger family being at odds with Marshall
ever since the 2004 election. That happened after the national leaders
of the Democratic Party blamed Marshall's ruling on gay marriage as
the cause for John Kerry's defeat to President Bush a year ago. When
that happened, the Sulzberger family began to distance themselves as
far as possible from Marshall. Even though the Sulzbergers encouraged
her to make the (illegal) gay marriage ruling, the Sulzbergers are now
doing "damage control" on their own reputation, inasmuch as
they were getting much blame from national Democrats.
It is not clear where Marshall's husband, premiere New York Times
columnist for fifty-years. Anthony Lewis, stands on the growing altercation
between his wife and his employer.
