Airplanes Fly Again on Sunday
Three MCM airplanes will be in formation
over Boston again today (Sunday) with their 100-foot banners flying
behind with 5-foot letters, calling upon Chief Justice Margaret Marshall
and the three Associate Justices who signed her Ruling on gay marriage
to resign. It appears likely the planes will be able to continue flying
all week.
The flight of the planes
today will include the apartment building where Justice Marshall lives
with her husband, Anthony Lewis, on Memorial Drive on the Charles River
and with her mother, who lives a few floors below.
It has become common knowledge
that many judges, lawyers and legislators are now advising her to resign
quickly and not risk the pensions of the three Associate Justices who
signed her illegal ruling.
It's become obvious that
she must not continue this egocentric path. She's irreparably stained
from her public assurance in 1999 to the lesbian attorney, Mary Bonauto,
at the annual meeting of the Gay & Lesbian Bar Association. There,
she assured Attorney Bonauto
she would win a suit for gay marriage if it were filed in this state.
Margaret Marshall will always
be a tragic figure if she remains on as Chief Justice. It's much better
for her to resign with dignity and say that the world is not yet ready
for her compassion. All of her friends will praise and cheer her as
they did Anita Hill. She will undoubtedly be quickly hired by Yale Law
School or Wellesley College, for starters.
Justice Marshall has had
a remarkable career, arriving here as a 22-year-old student from South
Africa who had us accept her and then the Constitution of her home country,
as our own in her ruling on gay marriage.
