Tom Reilly Loses After Switching in Favor of Gay Marriage
Tom Reilly is
another losing Democrat since he switched to supporting gay marriage.
He was ahead of Mitt Romney in July by six points but a new poll by
the same company shows Romney now ahead by four points, which is a
ten point change since July.
Although Reilly has always taken an unfair pounding
from conservatives as an advocate of gay marriage, that has never
been the experience of "Mass. Citizens for Marriage." When
Mass. Citizens started the process for its "Protection of Marriage
Amendment" in 2002, it was concerned that Attorney General Reilly
would say that the Amendment should not be permitted. But
to their surprise, Reilly was very fair. They were never sure
how involved Reilly himself was, but his office was excellent. As
a result, the editor of Bay Windows wrote in an editorial that he
would never forgive Reilly.
Another example was
when the Attorney General sent Judith Yogman to the SJC to argue against
gay marriage before Chief Justice Margaret Marshall. Reilly couldn't
have found a better lawyer than Judith Yogman. She was superb and
hurt Marshall very much.
We'll never know
the inner thoughts of any politician but it appears as though Reilly
was one of the best professional Democrats we could find.
