Letter: Massachusetts needs Arnold
Saturday, July 24, 2004
If anyone can think of a way to entice Arnold Schwartzenegger to move to Massachusetts, please let me know! If any state ever needed someone with Schwartzenegger's chutzpah, it's Massachusetts. In total frustration, he called the Democratic legislators in California "girlie-men" because of their continued refusal to vote on a much-needed budget. It was his effective way of putting the spotlight on the legislators of that state. He accused them of being beholden to special interests. If ever this crass insult could be applied to anyone it would be the cowardly legislators here in Massachusetts. They are quaking in their boots afraid to offend the powerful homosexual lobby which has all but taken up residence on Beacon Hill.
In 2002, when a Constitutional Convention was called three times to vote on the Protection of Marriage Amendment, they instead voted to adjourn each time without ever taking a vote. This, in spite of the fact that more than 130,000 signatures had been collected in order for this issue to ultimately be put on the ballot for the voters to decide. Thanks to the leadership of then-Senate President Tom Birmingham, the will of the people was totally and absolutely frustrated.
Had the legislators done their job in 2002, the SJC would have been powerless to dictate to the legislators what they must do in order to meet their demands.
The matter of whether or not to make gay marriage legal is far too important to be decided by a small minority of four judges. The vote on the SJC court was 3 to 3, with Justice Margaret Marshall voting to break the tie, making it 4 to 3. Should't the people have had something to say about this important matter? Do we still live under a representative government, or are we to be ruled by judicial fiat? Is there someone, anyone, brave enough to take the first step of impeaching these rogue judges who have perverted our state's Constitution in order to further their own agenda?
So far, the answer to that question appears to be a resounding NO! Our only hope is that someone like Arnold Schwartzenegger will come along who is brave enough to put the spotlight on our own "girlie-men" who currently occupy the State House.
