Mitt Romney didn’t run a brilliant campaign in 2002 (although he thinks he did), he was the only one the voters could turn to in order to show their disgust with the Democrats. First, the voters sent the powerful Tom Birmingham to the graveyard for his illegal actions against marriage. Then Shannon O’Brien came out for gay marriage (after being pressured by the Globe) and then she waffled on the subject and consequently lost to Romney. Terry McAuliffe has told the Globe this year that he does not want “gay marriage” to be an issue at the Convention, which is due to start on July 26. But he is living in a fantasy if he thinks the outraged citizens are going to remain silent during his Convention if the Democrats violate the Constitution again. Phil Johnston led the Massachusetts Democratic Party this year in endorsing “gay marriage” even though the Globe reported that this was a foolish thing to do since the rank-and-file do not support that decision. John Kerry told a nationwide audience on Face the Nation in 2002 (he was “trapped” by an inquisitive Tim Russert) that the Democrats in his home state had to take a vote on the Protection of Marriage Amendment.
