Gov. Romney Also Has Problems

The Republicans under Mitt Romney are not blameless, says Sally Pawlick, but Romney’s sin is only in his attempt to exploit the corruption for his political gain, rather than protecting our society.

“He’s listening to his advisors from out-of-state, who have tried to place him in the ‘mainstream’ in an attempt to satisfy everyone, instead of taking a principled stand. Early in his campaign, he even humiliated his wife, son and daughter-in-law who had signed our Amendment. He’s seeking a national office instead of working for Massachusetts, but it’s backfiring on him. We are on talk shows across the nation and they understand out there that Romney is simply a ‘pretty face’ who is always posturing. It’s too bad because it’s not too late for him to gain a national reputation as a leader. After all, Ronald Reagan won Massachusetts both in 1980 and 1984. He ought to be playing to that fact.”

Pawlick says that during the campaign in 2002, Romney should have made this a Republican/Democrat issue, but instead he ran away from the Republican base and tried to please everyone.

“Of course, that didn’t work, it never does. He’s lost much of his base, including the large bloc who wanted Jim Rappaport to be Lieutenant Governor. Romney was hostile to the vast majority of voters who are against homosexual marriage. He wouldn’t even acknowledge us. He doesn’t realize that almost any Republican would have beaten the Democrats in 2002. Their embrace of homosexual marriage caused them to lose. It was our attacks against Tom Birmingham that got Romney elected.

“Lately, he’s been attacking Attorney General Tom Reilly in an effort to force Reilly to bring a lawsuit against Margaret Marshall in her own court. Does he really think she is going to reverse herself? It was sensible for Reilly to refuse to bring such a suit. Actually, we have no problem with what Reilly did in the complicated process of getting our Amendment to the people. Many of our opponents, who are his political allies, became extremely angry at him because of his principled decisions on our Amendment. We have no complaint with what he did.”

Pawlick points out that Romney still has not endorsed the efforts of Article 8 to make Marshall’s decision null-and-void by removing the four judges who made the illegal ruling.

“There definitely are people out there who don’t want to see homosexual marriage go away because they believe they are gaining some sort of advantage from it. They enjoy the process. It appears as though Gov. Romney may be one of them, although we hope not.”

Pawlick also points out that it was the Republican leader in the Senate, Brian Lees, who seconded the illegal motion to adjourn in 2002, and it was he who voted in 2004 to further cloud the Constitutional Amendments so that everyone is still totally confused.
