Unitarians Confused about “Religion,” as well as “Marriage”
Thursday May 13, 2004

The Unitarians were featured as the “leading religious voice” for homosexual “marriage” yesterday in an A.P. story.

But the truth is the Unitarians don’t understand “religion” any more than they do “marriage,” inasmuch as very few Unitarians believe in a God, whether it be Judeo/Christian, Buddhist, Hindu or Moslem. They are a debating society of political activists with only 9.5% Christians and a smattering of others who believe in any God. However, they are indeed one of the loudest voices for homosexual marriage, hiding in the historic white churches of the original New England settlers, always getting in the Globe and elsewhere in major stories about “ministers” who favor homosexual “marriage.” Fifty-percent of the plaintiffs in the marriage lawsuit are Unitarians, including Hillary Goodridge, and the UUA is proud to proclaim that fact also. There was one thing in the A.P. story that was accurate: they represent a “tiny” and dwindling number of people, but the media gives them huge coverage.

For those who wish to check the numbers, they have 46.1% Humanists (who by definition do not believe in any God), 19.0% Earth/Nature centered, 13.0 Theist, 6.2% Mystic, 3.6% Buddhist, 1.3% Jewish, 0.4% Hindu, 0.1 Moslem and 13.3% other. The numbers total more than 100% because some people gave more than one choice. Their survey was taken in 1997 and can be found on the Unitarian website, www.uua.org under the “Needs and Aspirations Survey.”
