Please Call Speaker Finneran Now
Wednesday May 12, 2004

It’s no secret that civil unions would have started in 2000 if it were not for House Speaker Tom Finneran. It had already passed the Senate and was “stalled” in the House because of Finneran..

For this he took a tremendous pummeling from the liberal wing of his party. His lieutenant, Rep. John Rogers, was almost destroyed by the lawyers at the Massachusetts Bar Association. Finneran knew he was doing a wise thing because the people were ultimately behind him. But they were far behind. They had no clue what was going on and were ignoring the whole thing.

Massachusetts Citizens for Marriage was unable to build enough momentum in 2002 to stop the Globe from lying, cheating and libeling the good citizens of MCM, so the Globe, Senate President Birmingham, Margaret Marshall and many others were able to break the law and stop the Marriage Amendment from passing.

This year, we have good momentum but we can’t expect Finneran to commit suicide if the citizens are too sluggish and lazy to care. He won’t die for a cause which we are not energized to win (and we would be very foolish to ask him to do so).

So we should start calling the Speaker at 617-722-2500 to thank him for all he has done in the past and to let him know that we are energized.

We will never know whether Tom Finneran is truly serious about removing judges because he really believes in it, or whether he is just a good politician who is trying to guess what the voters want in order to further his career. We know he is very busy with many things like the budget. Therefore, as Ronald Reagan said, “Trust but verify.” That is also a good motto for us.
